Logistics, operations, tech, inventory optimization

From transponders to smart warehouses

Radio frequency identification has its roots in World War II. The British Royal Air Force then used similar technology to distinguish its own aircraft from those of the enemy ("Identify Friend or Foe" - IFF).

The first commercial experiments began during the 1960s and 1970s, but RFID systems became practically applicable only at the end of the 1990s, when the price of chips began to drop significantly. In 1973, Charles Walton's first patent was registered, while during the eighties the technology found application in access control and records in livestock.

At the beginning of this millennium, well-known retail chains such as Walmart and Metro launched projects in which RFID tags were used to track pallets and items in warehouses and sales facilities.

Today, in 2025, it is an important part of digital supply chains that enable connectivity with the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI).

Current application in logistics and operations:

- Tracking movement through processes

- Reduction of errors

- Stock optimization

- Security and authenticity

- Smart warehouses
